Message on Campus Closure

After careful consideration and extensive deliberation, New York Institute of Technology announced on February 10, 2026, that it has begun the process of closing its Vancouver campus. This decision was not reached lightly. Our Vancouver campus has been proud to educate thousands of engaged and talented students over the years. However, during the past 24 months, the campus has experienced a significant decline in enrollment due to reductions in the number of study permits available to international students.

As a result, no new students will be enrolled after this spring 2026 term.  We are developing a teach-out plan for our current students in Vancouver to facilitate the timely completion of their degrees and a smooth transition for all.

General

There is no single calendar date set at this time. The spring 2026 term is underway and will continue as scheduled through the week of May 5, 2026. Additional terms will be offered as needed so that currently enrolled students can complete their degrees in a timely manner.

New York Tech-Vancouver currently has 213 students. In-person classes are held at the Broadway Tech Centre on Virtual Way.

In January 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a significant reduction (35%) in international study permits alongside a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) allocation system. In 2024, graduate degrees offered in the public and private sectors were exempted from the PAL system, as master’s graduates were seen as excellent candidates to succeed in Canada’s labour market and were not seen as driving the rapid rise in temporary residents.

Further reductions were announced in November 2025 to align with the federal goal of reducing Canada’s temporary population to below 5% by the end of 2027. Graduate students were included in the PALS allocation, and accordingly, New York Tech received a generous allocation of 1087 PALs. These changes reduced new international student intake across Canada, with provinces such as British Columbia heavily affected.

In 2026, IRCC exempted graduate international students attending public institutions but not private institutions. This decision reduced the overall number of PALs available, and New York Tech’s PAL allocation was reduced to 106, a 90% reduction. This decision made the Vancouver campus financially non-viable.

Yes. In recent years, a number of concepts and proposals have been put forward to establish new programs and broaden our offerings. We are respected and recognized for quality programming that aligns with labour market needs that supplement the public post-secondary system. However, as a result of the mandatory reductions in international student numbers, we no longer have a viable business model in Canada. Advocacy has been pursued, but the study permit allowances are non-negotiable, and the ensuing small size of our student cohort is insufficient to fund the costs of maintaining the Vancouver campus.

Students

Yes, provided that you meet their entrance requirements. Some institutions may not accept all qualifications or course credits due to residency requirements or program differences. Not all programs have direct equivalents at other institutions. If you are considering a transfer, please contact the Office of Student Affairs to explore realistic options.

Transferring students must meet the receiving institution’s admissions requirements. In addition, students would generally require a new PAL and a new study permit. New York Tech will assist students where we are able.

New York Tech is exploring potential collaborations. More information will be shared as soon as details are confirmed.

Online & Remote Study

Not at this time. Any future changes will be communicated to you directly.

New York Tech may be able to make classes available in a hybrid modality for students who need to study remotely. This option is not generally recommended and, depending on the length of illness or inability to complete your studies, may have an impact on your ability to complete from the Vancouver campus. You must graduate from the Vancouver campus as long as it remains open to remain eligible for a post-graduate work permit.

Please contact the Office of Student Affairs promptly to discuss documentation, timelines, and course availability.

Possibly, depending on course availability. If a student is ill, instructors may work with the student to support completion with the in-class cohort. Hybrid options may be available in some cases.
