Multi-Faith/Quiet Space Rules
Rules and Responsibilities
The Multi-faith/Quiet Space is a silent, mixed-gender, and mixed-faith space for all students of New York Tech. A maximum number of four students may use this space at the same time. This room is a shared space that relies largely on the respect of users. It is open only to New York Tech students and staff and not to external individuals or organizations. The prayer room is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Guidelines for Use:
- This space is a multi-faith space, so please be respectful of all faiths that use this room.
- This space is for quiet activities such as prayer and meditation.
- Please be respectful of the noise levels in the Multi-faith/Quiet Space and keep conversations to a minimum.
- Please remove all footwear before entering the space.
- Attending classes from this room is prohibited.
- No food or drink is permitted in this space.
- Please refrain from using mobile phones or other electronic devices. Silent mode and airplane mode are appreciated.
- The use of candles, incense, or open flames of any kind is prohibited.
- No items should be left behind after using the space. We are not responsible for the loss of any item left behind.
- Monetary collections or distributions of any sort are prohibited.
- Refrain from distributing flyers or posters without permission.
- Studying is not permitted in the prayer room quiet space
- Please tidy the room when you leave for the next user.
- No meetings of any sort are permitted.
- Locking the room from the inside is not permitted at any time.
Additional guidelines:
- Footwear: You are welcome to remove your shoes before entering the Multi-faith/Quiet Space, particularly for certain activities.
- Speakers: The use of speakers is not permitted unless otherwise stated under the specific room rules and regulations.
- Events: Multi-faith/Quiet Space is intended for drop-in use during open hours unless otherwise stated.
- Other potential users of Multi-faith/Quiet Space: The opportunity for space, quiet, retreat, and refuge may help many in managing life, health, and wellbeing. During a traumatic event, such as bereavement, these spaces can be useful places of calm recollection. Users for whom religion may be of no obvious significance are equally welcome.
Reporting a Problem About Conflict/Facilities:
- If you encounter any issues with these rooms or their use or complaints about other users, please report it as soon as possible to Director of Student Affairs Shannon Svingen-Jones at ssvingen@nyit.edu.
- Concerns regarding cleanliness, damage, lighting, and misuse of these facilities can be reported to Assistant Director of Business Administration Sharon Raj at sraj02@nyit.edu
Urgent Concerns:
In case of fire or emergency evacuation, follow the procedures posted in the rooms. In the event of an incident or concern that requires attention, contact BTC Security by calling 604.834.0246. For emergencies that require an immediate response, call 911.
