Conditional Admission—Prerequisites
Prerequisite requirements for applicants without a bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT, or a related field.
Are you aspiring to join our computing-based Master of Data Science (MDS) program at the Vancouver campus of New York Institute of Technology but don’t yet meet the required admission criteria? If your academic background is in an unrelated field or lacks sufficient coverage of the necessary math courses, we’re here to help you bridge that gap.
At New York Tech-Vancouver, we believe in empowering students to achieve their academic and professional goals while maintaining high standards of excellence. That’s why we now offer a flexible and affordable pathway to complete the required mathematical foundation courses, making you eligible to apply for our computing-based graduate programs.
Required Mathematical Foundation Courses
The following math foundation courses are essential for admission to the Master of Data Science program:
- CSCI 505 Elements of Discrete Structures (3 credits)
- MATH 170 Calculus I (4 credits)
- MATH 180 Calculus II (4 credits)
- MATH 310 Linear Algebra (3 credits)
Flexible Learning Options
To provide greater flexibility, we recommend completing these courses through third-party education providers i.e. Coursera. These carefully selected alternatives allow you to fulfill the math requirements at your own pace and at a lower cost.

Important Notes
- Third-Party Providers: These courses are offered independently by third-party providers. Please note that New York Tech-Vancouver cannot provide support, intervene in disputes, or issue refunds for these courses.
- Submission of Certificates: Upon completing a course, please submit your completion certificate to vancouver.admissions@nyit.edu. This step is essential to update your admission file and verify your eligibility.
- Eligibility for Admission: Successfully completing these courses will make you eligible to apply for admission. However, additional on-campus prerequisite courses may still be required based on your chosen program.
- Upon completion of the prerequisite courses outlined above, students will be eligible for admission to the Master of Data Science program, provided they meet the overall GPA and English proficiency requirements. Additionally, applicants may still be required to take one-to-two additional prerequisite courses offered on campus:
- DTSC 501: Fundamental Tools for Data Science
- DTSC 502: Fundamental Probability and Statistics for Data Science
